Wireless providers geared up in preparation for Hurricane Matthew, setting up redundant network operation centers, satellite cell on trucks and cell on wheels solutions, with some cutting charges for calls to impacted nations like Haiti.
Although a lot of eyes focused on the coastline, from Florida to North Carolina by the end of the week, service providers and their partners in the New IP Agency vendor community were busy throughout the week. Let's take a welcome break from weather reports to catch up on some news you may have missed.
To address the challenge government and enterprise customers face when operating multiple Internet of Things operating systems, Deutsche Telekom launched a multi-IoT platform in its House of Clouds data center. The offering first will integrate Azure IoT Suite from Microsoft, followed by Cisco Fog and the IoT platform from Huawei, according to a release. "According to a study by PAC, we've only captured 5% of the potential of the IoT. This is due, among other factors, to the highly fragmented market, which requires users to manage many different specialist suppliers," says Anette Bronder, director of T-Systems' Digital Division. "We now offer a scalable, pan-industry platform, together with plug-and-play starter packages to help companies begin using the IoT."
Acting as interpreter and distributor, Deutsche Telekom collects data from an array of hardware, then routes it through gateways to the customer's platform of choice for processing, which Deutsche Telekom operates as a data custodian. In addition, the CSP offers various IoT packages -- or IoT as a service -- for businesses seeking to enter IoT.
Beginning next year, Orange Labs Network and Ericsson are partnering on several 5G pilots across Europe. Ericsson plans to test its 5G solutions on Orange's network: It will deliver multi-gigabit in suburban or rural areas, Internet of Things network services and develop connected cars, Ericsson says. The vendor will support Orange's transition to 5G, as well as the service provider's work with SDN and NFV. "Our ambition is to be prepared for a 5G deployment in 2020. By joining forces with Ericsson, we will create for our customers a solid network capable of delivering a wide range of services, from greater data speed everywhere to specialized services for cities and industries," says Alain Maloberti, senior vice president of Orange Labs Networks.
Prepping for 5G
Looking to be where the enterprise shops, AT&T this week unveiled partnerships to offer its cloud networking services through IBM and Amazon Web Services. Under the IBM pact, IBM's sales and marketing teams will offer AT&T FlexWare to enterprises and AT&T will operate apps on IBM's cloud, analytics, cognitive and cloud services. IBM also will incorporate FlexWare within its own suites, a move it's already started. (See AT&T Expands DIY Virtualization.)
The Amazon agreement is slated to cover cloud networking, mobility, IoT, security and analytics, and focuses primarily on business cloud networking, IoT and threat management. The two companies already work together in some areas, including AT&T's NetBond high-speed, secure connection service. (See What's First for AWS & AT&T?)
During Ultra-Broadband Forum 2016 (UBBF) on Thursday, Huawei shared its video strategy for CSPs -- a service that accounts for less than half of most carriers' broadband network users. Under Huawei's strategy, service providers will position video as their basic service and establish a business model that transforms broadband network customers -- often powered by New IP technologies -- into video service users. Huawei's three business models to facilitate carriers transitioning to embrace and monetize video include broadband, experience and ecosystem monetization, Ken Wang, president of Global Marketing and Solution Sales at Huawei's Carrier Business Group told forum attendees.
ASTRID, operator of Belgium's national emergency services communication network, this week deployed a new synchronization network built by CSP Arcadiz Telecom. ASTRID chose the OSA 5411 access device by Oscilloquartz, an ADVA Optical Networking company, as the anchor of its transport infrastructure. The partners created a solution that integrated with its existing optical transport network.
Nokia Bell Labs this week unveiled F-Cell, small-cell technology that it says provides more flexibility, efficiency and "optimized deployment economics" to accelerate the creation of a high-capacity, low-latency network -- advancing Nokia's Future X Network vision of 100x capacity growth and an equal reduction in latency, with augmented, simpler deployment costs that expand the exploration of the human possibility of technology at speed, with the creation of new value. F-Cell architecture consists of a closed loop, 64-antenna MIMO system in a centralized site that forms eight beams to create eight solar-powered F-Cells. This architecture supports non-line-of-sight wireless networking in frequency division duplex or time division duplex (TDD) mode, according to Nokia Bell Labs. The parallel operation of up to eight separate 20 MHz channels generate a throughput rate of ~1Gbit/s over existing LTE networks, it adds. Eventually, the architecture will enable up to 10s of Gigabits per second via higher spectral bandwidth, more antenna arrays and new spectral band, the lab predicts.
Drone-Delivered Video on Demand
Bell Labs recently demonstrated drone-based delivery of an F-Cell to a Nokia office rooftop. The F-Cell wirelessly self-powered, self-configured and auto-connected to the network and instantly began to stream high-definition video.
Aqua Comms, which provides scalable sub-sea networks, this week completed a trial of Ciena's WaveLogic 3 Extreme transmission technology on a high-capacity, trans-Atlantic subsea cable network connecting New York to London via Dublin, proving the Ciena technology will increase Aqua Comm's submarine network by 50%, according to Ciena. Aqua Comms' AEConnect is designed to meet growing demand for trans-Atlantic data center interconnectivity, securely and reliably, by avoiding major fishing areas, anchorage areas and by featuring extra armoring and deeper burial. The trial follows a proof of concept of Ciena's WaveLogic Encryption, plus network expansion using Ciena's GeoMesh6500 Packet-Optical Platform and
WaveLogic 3 Extreme coherent optics.
Adtran is extending its Enabling Communities, Connecting Lives (ECCL) program across EMEA, in part to support the European Commission's recent Connectivity for a European Gigabit Society Initiative. Both programs foster adoption of Gigabit broadband, thereby increasing economic development and digital transformation, says Adtran in a release.
Global mobility revenue will reach more than $1.7 trillion in 2020, driven primarily by double-digit growth in software sales, according to the most recent Worldwide Semiannual Mobility Spending Guide from IDC. The strongest growth in software is projected to come from mobile application development platforms, mobile enterprise apps and mobile enterprise security, resulting in a 15% increase in spending, says Carrie MacGillivray, vice president of Mobility & Internet of Things at IDC, in a statement. Service providers should focus initial efforts on markets like banking; discrete manufacturing; professional services; retail; healthcare; professional services; and utilities, which will lead the spending fray. Telecom is also a leading adopter, IDC says.
While the NIA typically focuses on high-performance, New IP technologies, it's interesting to note service providers' continued investment in low-power wide area network (LPWAN) solutions driving many Internet of Things (IoT) implementations. By 2025, LPWAN services will reach $75 billion in revenue worldwide, according to a survey released this week by ON World. One in three of the "150+ IoT market leaders" plan or offer LPWAN products and services, primarily opting for LoRa or SigFox, the research firm says. A growing number of service providers such as AT&T, Bouygues, Orange, SK Telecom and Verizon join independent LPWAN operators like SigFox, Ingenu, Qowisio, M2Ocity and SENET, plus free, crowdsourced "The Things Network," ON World adds.
