With today's release of the Ensemble SmartWAN platform, ADVA Optical Networking expects to simplify deployment and management of virtualized SD-WAN solutions without the lock-in typically associated with appliances and all the benefits of NFV.
Ensemble SmartWAN is a vendor-neutral virtual networking platform that uses carrier-class OpenStack to provide simplified deployment, built-in cloud and scale, says Prayson Pate, chief technology officer for Ensemble at ADVA Optical Networking (Frankfurt: ADV) in an interview.
"It's not an SD-WAN platform, per se. It's a virtualization platform that, in particular, helps make SD-WAN much more deployable by addressing shortcomings in terms of being able to be deployed in a zero-touch fashion on open servers, working with OpenStack in a scalable fashion and working with both overlay and underlay networking," he says. "We're working with a number of key suppliers of SD-WAN, so we're not replacing SD-WAN. We're making it better. We're making it more carrier-class."
The platform uses NFV management and orchestration principles to empower service providers to integrate virtual SD-WANs into their service offerings and interfaces directly with MPLS VPNs without requiring a customer edge (CE) router. It also provides MPLS peering and tunnels typically delivered by a CE router, further eliminating any need for a CE router, according to ADVA.
"Operators have made a lot of money over the years over Layer 3 VPN over MLPS. In some cases they've been getting a premium. That's how SD-WAN got started," says Pate. "The ones who are embracing this whole service innovation outlook to drive new revenue, this is the platform that will help them do it. Operators can manage SD-WAN solutions in an automated, virtualized manner while efficiently deploying value-added services on top of their SD-WAN services."
ADVA partners include Silver Peak, Versa Networks and Nokia Nuage Networks, but the platform is vendor neutral.
"This is a platform that will help service providers evolve their managed services portfolio to offer virtual SD-WANs and best-of-breed VNFs from leading VNF suppliers, such as Silver Peak, and this is an enormous leap," says Nav Chander, senior director, service provider marketing, Silver Peak, in a statement. "We've worked closely with the ADVA Ensemble team to ensure that our EdgeConnect-SP SD-WAN solution can be introduced seamlessly with SmartWAN."
