Four years ago, when the communications industry initially started work on developing NFV, it skipped a critical step: omitting the obvious chance to create a single authoritative resource defining the terminology used to describe NFV and SDN. Not surprisingly, in the intervening years, this oversight has caused many headaches for both developers and first users of both technologies.

This year, 2017, the NIA will resolve this confusion by creating the first definitive taxonomy of next-gen communications. Step 1 is to create a glossary which encompasses everything from service definitions, to data models, and standards. Step 2 is to take this lexicon of terms and connect them in a formal comms taxonomy; one which defines the architecture of the virtualized network and the services that run over it. (In addition to NFV and SDN, this taxonomy will also be extended to cover adjacent technologies, including OSS and automation – as well as common network services such as vCPE and vEPC.)

Work on the Next-Gen Comms Taxonomy will be led by EANTC, an internationally recognized communications test center and established partner of NIA, which will lead a Taxonomy Committee made up from other leading NIA members. The committee will begin its task by “boiling the ocean” – collecting, analyzing, documenting and making sense of the helpful but inconsistent pre-existing work that has been done in this area by a variety of organizations, including ETSI, TMF, MEF and OIF.

The end result of the Taxonomy Committee’s work will be multiple wiki pages containing the industry’s first comprehensive data set of diagrams, definitions and data models.
