Four years after its appearance there are still no universally accepted standards for NFV. This means that there is no agreed way for companies to develop new services and applications and get them to run on virtualized infrastructure from other vendors, resulting in almost universal interoperability issues between third-party virtualized apps and services and the NFV infrastructure they are supposed to run on.

NIA will this year launch the communications industry’s first NFV certification program, with the goal of validating interoperability between VNF services and applications and the NFV infrastructure solutions from all leading vendors.

NIA Certification will cover several key areas:

  • Onboarding of VNFs
  • Infrastructure baseline performance
  • Network service creation and management
  • Application-level performance
  • NFV/SDN integration

Participants are free to pick one of the NIA’s approved test labs worldwide for the certification. Passed certifications will be published (unless the vendor vetoes publication at the time of report receipt). If published, detailed information about software versions tested, date of execution, certification program release tested against and executing test lab will all be published.

By creating the industry’s first authoritative and independent certification program, NIA will solve a huge issue for service providers; giving them, for the first time, the assurance that products from different vendors will work together seamlessly, and without having to establish that interoperability in every case themselves through expensive and time consuming laboratory testing.
