@Alison regarding evaluating suppliers.  I think it important to matiain regular contact with the equipment and software supplier industry to see what is developing in the market.  By keeping that regular contact you can evaulate solutions on paper. We also bring solutions into our lab envrionment and do technology prototypes to get first hand experience with the solutions out there.   It is also imprtnat to build aninfrastructure that allows you to plug in new components into your workflow so you can use differnt tools to solve different problems.
