Re: Multifactor authentication is going to be the future...
<The alternative password systems that I currently hate are the ones that ask you to choose some pictures out of a set of images.. ugh.>

I have to admit, I've never seen that one. I do get a single image asking me to verify if that is the image I selected when setting up the account, though. That's a feature I find utterly useless with respect to security.

<I also dislike the systems that ask you to pick security questions from a pre-built list -- that you have no memorable answers for. What if I never had a pet as a child? Or a favorite teacher?  >

I'm with you there. They do get annoying. I also had no markedly favorite teacher. There are also variations that are almost the same like the childhood pet or first pet or current pet. Also I think that it is possible to get the answers to some of these questions -- particularly that old unreliable one of mother's maiden name -- from people's FB information.

Re: Let's hope synthetic speech doesn't catch up too quickly...
@mhhf1ve I don't know if it's just due the clip, but he really looks dubbed, you know, slight out of sync with the voice. But the comments there were on point about password frustrations.

Attempting to mimic someone probably would not get you through the "my voice is my password at ___" gateway. But it may be possible to get a good enough recording of them to do so. That's why it's not considered adequate to use biometric authentication alone for something you want completely secure.

Multifactor authentication is going to be the future...
> "Voiceprints alone are not 100% proof against spoofing..."

Plenty of people are working on alternatives to passwords, but so far, no one has "cracked" the challenge of making a secure system that is also convenient and easy to remember (AND actually secure).

The alternative password systems that I currently hate are the ones that ask you to choose some pictures out of a set of images.. ugh.

I also dislike the systems that ask you to pick security questions from a pre-built list -- that you have no memorable answers for. What if I never had a pet as a child? Or a favorite teacher?

Let's hope synthetic speech doesn't catch up too quickly...
The topic of voice biometrics always reminds me of this ST:TNG episode where Data takes over the ship by mimicking the Capt's voice and changing the ship's computer password....
