Re: Platforms
Yes, there's going to be lots of losers in the race to figure out what's going to be a profitable product or service for the smart home. Something affordable or amazingly usefull is going to be what those manufacturers and marketers are looking for.

Re: Platforms
We will be witness to a lot of "transformations" before we actually figure out a reasonably decent roadmap.

Re: Platforms
That's odd, I wonder what exactly that's about. Have you ever seen that with any other technology?

Re: Platforms
I think it's kind of a niche that's already filled by other devices. I can do voice controlled everything on my phone, or my Sonos, or my Chromecast -- where does the Nest excel that these other products failed?

Re: Platforms
"I've never used a Nest device but I assume that they are charging too much for a product that already exists and doesn't really need much functionality in the first place. "

The company's engineers came from Apple, so their early success was driven by blind tech press adoration of well-designed, but not entirely revolutionary ideas. In fact the Nest has has numerous problems in terms of firmware updates effectively making it a paperweight.

Like buying companies like Revolv, then effectively bricking a product customers paid $300 for just one year earlier? :)

Why can't it be shipped to Canada? FCC restrictions?

You probably don't need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to things like thermostats. If they work, they work.
