I originally had wondered if such foundries weren't just PR mechanisms designed to give big companies the illusion of innovation over ACTUAL innovation. But I have seen some positive news coming out of such efforts.

The foundary concept seems to be catching on. AT&T was the first to do it I think, and the reporting on the subject has obviously made other players in the space interested. 

Foundaries certainly help entrepreneurs. In addition, if somehting ends up working, it's big for the larger organization. In this way, everyone wins.
